Meet the Woman Behind Panashe Designs

Chipo Mudzengi-Hwami creates style that celebrates your culture and confidence.

From Single Motherhood to Global Vision

Chipo grew up in Zimbabwe surrounded by fabric, color, and creation. Her father was a fashion designer, and the sound of sewing machines was the soundtrack of her childhood. Her fashion journey didn’t begin as a glamorous dream. It started as survival. As a young single mother in Texas, Chipo struggled to make ends meet and sometimes relied on sample diapers just to get by. One day, she made a decision: “I refuse to become a statistic.” She picked up a sewing machine, remembered her childhood training, and started sewing again — this time with a bigger purpose. What began as a way to provide for her daughter evolved into Panashe Designs, a brand that carries faith, strength, and resilience in every stitch.

From Zimbabwe to Los Angeles

After relocating to Los Angeles, Chipo formally studied fashion design and refined her craft. In 2018, she relaunched her brand, and by 2025 she registered Panashe Designs as an LLC. Her work quickly attracted attention — from custom gowns that went viral on TikTok and Instagram to a gown inspired by Viola Davis that turned heads online. One of her standout pieces led to a special commission for Princess Sarah Culberson of Sierra Leone for the Trumpet Awards. Those moments confirmed what Chipo already knew: her designs are more than beautiful garments. They are powerful statements.

 What “Panashe” Really Means

“Panashe” means “God is here” or “God is in this place.” For Chipo, that phrase isn’t just a name — it’s a promise. Every collection is rooted in faith, guided by purpose, and created with the belief that women are meant to be seen, honored, and celebrated.
